When can I terminate my YEL insurance?

Your YEL insurance can be terminated in these situations

• your self-employment has ended completely or decreased to the extent that your YEL income is lower than the lower limit specified for YEL insurance. Read more about the YEL income.
• your company’s legal form, ownership structure or your position as an entrepreneur have changed so that you no longer need YEL insurance. Read more about the impacts of the changes.
• there will be a long break in your self-employment due to, for example, parental leave and you stop working completely for that period. Read more about taking parental leave.
• you retire on an old-age pension. If you continue your self-employment while on an old-age pension, you can take out voluntary YEL insurance. Read more about retiring.

Sometimes your YEL insurance can also be terminated retroactively. File the notice of termination in Ilmarinen’s online service. We terminate your YEL insurance retroactively to end on the date when your self-employment ended or on the date when your work input became so minor that your YEL income is below the YEL lower limit.

Paid insurance contributions when the insurance ends

You pay insurance contributions up until the date on which the insurance ends. If you have paid insurance contributions for a period extending beyond the end date or if the insurance is terminated retroactively, we will refund the contributions paid in excess to the payer.

You can terminate your insurance in our online service. In connection with the notice of termination, we ask you to provide your account number for a possible refund of insurance contributions.

You can provide your account number or your company’s account number by logging in to our online service here. You will have access to the online service for about 16 months after the end date of the insurance.
